Magnea – made in reykjavík is a clothing collection by fashion designer Magnea Einarsdóttir. The collection consists of timeless quality coats made of 100% Icelandic wool. Magnea has received well-deserved attention for her innovative approach to knitting and material handling of Icelandic wool which she has been developing over the last few years.
Sophisticated color palette and artistic presentation emphasize the striking possibilities that Icelandic wool brings to the table as a thrilling modern material. In the production process of made in reykjavík a strong emphasis is on contributing to increased sustainability in the fashion industry – aspects such as traceability, transparency, and local production. The outcome is triumphant, a fresh yet timeless design using Icelandic material.
About the project
Made in Reykjavík is a collection of outerwear, made entirely of Icelandic wool. By working locally throughout all stages - from material sourcing and design to production process - the aim is to create a sustainable product and to minimise the carbon footprint. The passion for creating an entirely local produced and sourced product, led the designer to exploring possibilities of 100% Icelandic wool. Having worked closely with local manufacturers and intimately with the fiber, by mixing it with other elements, the material has become familiar and its properties are clear.
About the designer
MAGNEA is a creative fashion studio based in Reykjavík. Innovative textiles, knitwear and beyond, are carefully designed by founder Magnea Einarsdóttir, a Central Saint Martins graduate. Always keeping the unique Icelandic wool in the loop, the aim is to use traditional methods in unseen ways.
Embracement of craftsmanship and material experimentation, with close attention to detail, has led the designer towards working closely with local manufacturers, combining unexpected materials from rubber to silk with locally sourced wool.
Each season the designer creates and develops unique fabrics. While staying true to the brands identity they are carefully executed into simple silhouettes and contemporary designs for women of all ages.
The Icelandic Design Award honours the best Icelandic design and architecture annually. The importance of design in our society, culture and business has been growing steadily, and it is therefore vital to increase the understanding of good design and highlight the value of quality.
Celebrating achievement and excellence, the Icelandic Design Award is given to a designer, a team, a studio or an architect in recognition of an outstanding new work, object, project or collection. The award is given to a recent project that demonstrates creative thinking, resourceful solutions, thorough presentation and professional methodology throughout the design process. Best investment in design recognises successful investment in design or architecture in the past year. It is awarded over to a company that has incorporated design in the core of its operations to create value and increase competitiveness.
