Michael Hendrix, Global Design Director and partner at IDEO, will be speaking at DesignTalks 2023 on 3rd May in Harpa.
No matter the creative endeavor—design, music, or dance, for example— the underlying process and mindset is the same. When you understand how creativity works you can consistently create conditions for innovation, not only in your art, but in any work you do.
Michael Hendrix is a Partner and Global Design Director at design and innovation consultancy IDEO, where he has worked on everything from home goods to homeland security. Concurrently, Michael has been an Assistant Professor of Business Management at Berklee College of Music. His first book, "Two Beats Ahead: What Musical Minds Teach Us About Innovation," coauthored with Panos A. Panay, President of the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs), explores the shared mindsets of musicians and designers as they apply to entrepreneurial pursuits. The book, featuring interviews and stories from Pharrell, Björk, T Bone Burnett.
Michael's career has spanned graphic design and marketing, branding, higher education, product development and executive leadership. A natural entrepreneur, he co-founded an art program for high schoolers, a design curriculum for undergrads, a professional design club, an open source song data initiative, and two businesses, the last of which, Tricycle, was recognized by Business Week, Fortune and the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum as a thought leader for sustainable design.
DesignTalks 2023 will take place in Harpa on the 3rd of May and is curated by Hlin Helga Guðlaugsdóttir.
This year’s theme is What now? and the event will tackle this question, explore and showcase some answers and alternatives, discuss current challenges for designers and architects and, if successful, raise even more questions!
DesignTalks addresses the challenges the world is facing and highlights the importance of design and architecture in societal and global change, with talks about impactful projects and inspiring conversations. Designers, architects and creative thinkers, international and local, provide insight into pressing issues with passion. Nothing is off limits.
