Secondary is nominated to the Icelandic Design Awards 2024
Secondary by Studio Erindrekar and Sigmundur Páll Freysteinsson, is nominated as Project of the year to the Icelandic Design Awards 2024. The award ceremony will take place in Gróska on November 7th.
From the jury:
The research project, Secondary, sheds light on the possibilities of utilizing secondary products of eiderdown farming. It includes spreading knowledge about the processing of the raw material from nest to product and communicating this knowledge to the public.
The outcome is extraordinary. The project has resulted in prototypes of outdoor clothing manufactured in Iceland from secondary eiderdown and wind and waterproof cotton. Iceland produces about 90% of eiderdown annually worldwide, making the country rich in eider farming expertise. Nevertheless, product development has been limited, and most eiderdown is exported as raw, unprocessed material.
Secondary eiderdown, which contains traces of plant fibers, shares the warm, light, and insulating qualities of first-class certified down. The project's main message, that material can be fully utilized and secondary products can play a bigger role, was showcased, and the importance of attitude change towards this utilization was successfully communicated.
The designers’ exhibition in Ásmundarsalur during Design March 2024 reflected their knowledge and respect regarding the subject while emphasizing the functionality and quality of secondary eiderdown in an accessible and creative manner.
