Open Call - Ideas for the Icelandic Pavillion to the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale
Iceland Design and Architecture is calling for proposals for the Icelandic Pavillion to the 19th International Architecture Exhibition at the 2025 Venice Biennale, which takes place from 24 May to 23 November 2025. This is Iceland’s first time participating in the Venice Architecture Biennale with an open call.
The successful proposal will put forward a bold, intriguing and thought-provoking exhibition concept for the Biennale that both engages and inspires the audience and is realistic and feasible to implement.
The idea should reflect the raison d’être of Icelandic architecture, its characteristics and subjects, as well as its connection to international architectural trends and discourse. Furthermore, the exhibition should highlight the ingenuity and creativity of the built environment that will allow us to meet the challenges of our time.
The Icelandic Ministry of Culture and Business Affairs has assigned Iceland Design and Architecture to manage the implementation of the project.
A two-stage application process
In the first stage, applicants are asked to submit a concise description of the exhibition concept and a simple visualisation of their idea.
In the second stage, 3 to 4 teams will be nominated to present their ideas before the Steering Group, which then selects the winning proposal.
Open Call
Applicants are invited to submit their proposals to the Selection Committee by 24 May 2024.
Concept development and presentations
The Selection Committee will select 3 to 4 teams to develop their ideas further.
The teams will present their ideas before the Selection Committee on 18 to 19 June.
Following the presentations, one team will be selected and awarded the contract. Subsequently, the team can start preparing and implementing the exhibition.
